Favignana...

Favignana – A Postcard-Perfect Island Full of Surprises

This idyllic island, located west of Sicily, is the largest of the three Egadi Islands. Favignana is a real gem, sitting just off the coast of Trapani, only a short ferry ride away. The other two islands, Levanzo and Marettimo, are just as charming and easy to visit with the local ferries connecting the islands.

Favignana truly surprised us — we hadn’t expected to discover all the little gems and contrasts she has to offer. This island has something for everyone — whether you love cycling and being active, swimming from cliffs and beaches, or simply enjoying the moment and soaking in the surroundings. You’ll also find charming shops, many housed in beautifully preserved, historic buildings. Favignana is simply perfect for a summer escape in Sicily.

We rented an apartment in the heart of town, just a stone's throw from Piazza Madrice, complete with a rooftop terrace and outdoor kitchen. Every morning, we made our own breakfast, and in the evenings, we’d relax with views of Favignana’s rooftops and watch the sunset paint the sky in soft, beautiful colors. Absolutely magical.

Planning a trip to Favignana?

We’ve put together a detailed guide on how to get to Favignana, including ferry options from Trapani and practical tips along the way.

Village Vibe and Life on the Piazza

There are several lovely squares in town, but the main one — Piazza Madrice — deserves a special mention. Here, small shops and restaurants come to life in the evening. Both locals and visitors gather to socialize when the heat of the day finally gives way to warm, comfortable evenings. It’s a lively, welcoming square — just like the ones you dream of on an Italian island.

Discover the Island by Bike — with or without a motor

Favignana is perfect for exploring by bike. There are several rental shops, and we recommend choosing one a little further into town — they tend to be more affordable than those by the ferry port.

You can cycle around the entire island, discovering famous beaches, dramatic cliffs, and dusty country roads winding through farms, open landscapes, and along the sea. Along the way, you’ll find small kiosks and bars, perfect for a drink and a chance to take in the view.

One day, we stumbled across a 1960s-inspired hippie restaurant hidden in a tiny forest. It felt like traveling back in time — and in the evening, the place transforms into a bohemian nightclub ruled by “peace and love”. Rest Favignana even offers transport to and from town in their own “hippie camper van” if you want to spend the evening here.

The Florio Family

The Florio family played a huge role in Favignana’s history, pioneering canned tuna production, which became central to the island’s economy. Today, you can discover their legacy by visiting the Ex Stabilimento Florio Tuna Museum and Palazzo Florio, their former home, now open to the public.

You’ll see films and photos showing life as a fisherman on the island and get a glimpse into the family’s extravagant lifestyle. One highlight is Donna Franca’s collection of stunning dresses, on loan from Italy’s luxury brand Prada. Both museums are well worth a visit when in Favignana.

Favignana’s Restaurants

As expected, tuna is the star ingredient in many of the island’s restaurants. In Favignana town, you’ll find eateries lined up around the small piazzas and along narrow, charming streets. Over the course of our week here, we found several favorite restaurants — and one true obsession, where Else ordered the same dish three times in a row. She was completely hooked!

Food in Favignana is an experience in itself – with fresh seafood and simple, authentic flavors.

Favignana’s Beaches

Favignana is full of gorgeous beach clubs and swimming spots, easily accessible by bike, taxi, or one of the few local buses. Be sure to check out the famous seaside locations like Cala Maro, Cala Rossa, Cala Azzurra, and Lido Burrone — each one different, each with its own unique charm.

We spent several days at Lido Punta Burrone, a lively beach club just 10 minutes by e-bike from town. Here you can rent sun loungers, enjoy simple but delicious lunches, and unwind with a drink in hand — one of our top picks on the island.

Other evenings we walked down to the local city beach, Spiaggia Praia, for a sunset swin  — the perfect way to end the day.

Explore Western Sicily

Western Sicily offers long sandy beaches, wine regions and island groups like the Egadi Islands. Here you’ll find well-known destinations such as Trapani and Erice – but also quieter areas and hidden gems along the coast.
