Susafa...

Masseria Susafa – History, Sustainability & Luxury

Deep in the Sicilian countryside, surrounded by rolling fields and endless hills, lies Masseria Susafa—a luxurious retreat where history, sustainability, and authentic hospitality come together. Reaching this hidden gem requires a spirit of adventure, as GPS navigation can often lead you astray. Thankfully, the hotel provides its own detailed directions to ensure a smooth arrival.

Without hesitation, we can say this is one of the most breathtaking places we have experienced in Sicily. We return year after year, drawn by its perfect blend of exclusivity and a laid-back atmosphere—where relaxation comes naturally.

A Chance Encounter That Became a Lifelong Love

We discovered Masseria Susafa by pure chance. A few years ago, during a trip through Sicily, we realized we were missing a night’s accommodation between Cefalù and Ragusa Ibla. What we found was more than just a place to stay—it was love at first sight.

Even the journey inland to Susafa is an experience in itself. The winding roads take you deep into a landscape that feels untouched by time, evoking a sense of stepping into another era. As you drive through the vast, open countryside, you may wonder whether you'll ever reach your destination—or find your way back to civilization.

A Historic Retreat Full of Charm

Masseria Susafa is a historic farmhouse that has been transformed into a luxury hotel, earning its place among Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH). In 2024, it was awarded its first Michelin Key, a prestigious recognition of its excellence.

The family who owns Susafa still lives on the estate, their daily lives unfolding on the farm. They are ever-present, ensuring that every guest feels at home. It's not uncommon to see the owners strolling the grounds with their loyal dog, Bruno, adding to the warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Sustainability & Serenity

With just a handful of exclusive rooms, Susafa is an adults-only retreat designed for true relaxation. There are no TVs or minibars—instead, guests are invited to immerse themselves in the stunning surroundings. And we couldn’t agree more with this philosophy.

Sustainability is at the heart of Susafa. The estate produces its own ancient grains, olive oil, vegetables, and herbs, ensuring a farm-to-table experience. Plastic has been replaced with glass, and all ingredients are organic and locally sourced. Their commitment to zero-kilometer dining reflects a deep respect for nature and tradition.

If you're even half-considering it: check the dates while you're here.

Unique Experiences in the Heart of Sicily

At Susafa, guests can take part in a range of experiences inspired by nature and Sicilian heritage. From wine tastings and guided herb garden walks to cooking classes, every activity is designed to connect you with the land. Here, you don’t just cook—you learn about centuries-old culinary traditions.

One of the most magical experiences is a romantic aperitivo at sunset, set amidst the golden wheat fields. A Land Rover transports you through the rolling landscape to a secluded pergola, where you’re left to enjoy the stillness of nature. Awaiting you is a beautifully set table with local wines and handpicked delicacies—an unforgettable moment of pure serenity.

For those craving even more adventure, Susafa offers a treetop picnic in a secluded forest hideaway or a sailing excursion aboard their private sailboat, departing from Mondello near Palermo.

A Kitchen Rooted in Tradition

Susafa’s restaurant, housed in a beautifully restored historic barn, is the heart of the estate. Here, both breakfast and dinner are served, showcasing the finest local ingredients. The farm-to-table philosophy is taken to the next level, with nearly all produce coming directly from Susafa or neighboring farms.

The culinary experience is deeply rooted in Sicilian tradition, with dishes prepared using time-honored techniques. The result? An organic, zero-kilometer dining experience that is both sustainable and unforgettable. Every bite is a testament to the passion and respect that Susafa has for its land.

We keep coming back. That's the only recommendation that matters.

We've stayed at Susafa more than once — which, given that we spent a year moving through Sicily with a lot of ground to cover, says everything. There is something about this place that earns return visits rather than just fond memories, year after year.
We use Booking.com for our own travel — including for Susafa. It gives us flexibility on cancellations, transparent pricing, and no surprises at check-in. If you want to stay here, that's where we'd send you.

The tranquility and nature at the pool at Susafa, Sicily

Susafa in brief:

Susafa is for people who want to stop. Not just slow down — actually stop.
It works beautifully if you're mid-trip and feel the weight of constant moving. It also works as a complete destination in itself — arrive, hand over your agenda, and let the estate fill the days.

You'll love it if you:
— Care about what you eat and where it came from
— Want luxury that doesn't feel performative
— Travel as a couple and value quiet more than nightlife
— Are interested in Sicilian agriculture, food traditions, or wine

It's probably not for you if:
— You need to be near a beach or a city
— You travel with children
— You need entertainment beyond what nature and good food provide

Where is it?

Susafa lies in the rural interior of Sicily, in the province of Palermo — roughly midway between Cefalù on the north coast and Agrigento to the south. It is not close to anything, which is part of the point.

The nearest town is Polizzi Generosa (about 10 km). Cefalù is roughly 1 hour by car, Palermo airport roughly 90 minutes and Catania airport is about 2.5 hours.

Important: Do not rely on standard GPS. The estate sends its own directions — ask for them when you book.
