Luxury Agriturismos and Eco-Estates in Sicily
We've spent the better part of a year moving through Sicily — living out of apartments, renting rooms above a farmacia, staying in places where the wi-fi password was handwritten on a scrap of paper. That kind of travel is rich and real, and we wouldn't trade it. But every few weeks, we felt it: the accumulation of moving, navigating, planning. The need to stop planning entirely.
That's when we'd book two or three nights at one of these estates.
Not as a luxury escape from Sicily — but as a different, slower version of it. No cities, no baroque squares, no decisions about where to eat. Just a pool surrounded by almond trees, a glass of wine that came from the vines you can see from your window, and someone else cooking dinner on these sustainable escapes of eco-luxury.
We call it the «vacation from the vacation». And every estate on this page is one we found that way — not from a list, but from a moment where we needed exactly what it turned out to offer.
Several estates. Different regions, different characters.
They aren't all the same kind of place. Susafa sits alone on a hilltop in the interior, genuinely remote. Villadorata is surrounded by Noto's wine country. Battimandorlo is small and personal — more like staying in someone's beautifully restored home. Planeta La Foresteria is part of one of Sicily's great wine estates. Fontes Episcopi feels almost ceremonial in its calm. And Baglio la Porta, near the Zingaro nature reserve, wakes you up with a view that earns the drive.
What they share: they're all set in the Sicilian countryside, they all offer something that a city hotel can't, and we've slept in all of them.

What people ask us…
Q: What is an agriturismo in Sicily?
A: An agriturismo is a working farm or agricultural estate that also offers accommodation, often with meals made from produce grown on-site. In Sicily, these range from simple rural guesthouses to fully restored historic estates with pools, wine cellars, and restaurant kitchens.
Q: What's the difference between a masseria and an agriturismo in Sicily?
A: A masseria is a specific type of fortified farmhouse, traditionally found in southern Italy. Most masserie operating as accommodation today have been restored — often keeping original stone structures while adding modern comforts. All the masserie on this list are working estates or restored historic properties.
Q: Are these estates suitable as a base for exploring Val di Noto or other parts of Sicily?
A: Several of them, yes. Villadorata and Battimandorlo are both within easy reach of Noto, Modica, and Ragusa. Susafa and Fontes Episcopi are better suited as destinations in their own right rather than touring bases — they're remote enough that you'll want to slow down once you arrive.
Q: Do you need a car to stay at a luxury rural estate in Sicily?
A: Yes, for all of these. Sicily's countryside estates are not served by public transport. A rental car is essential, and for most of them you'll be driving on minor roads. We'd recommend arriving in daylight the first time.
Q: When is the best time of year to visit a rural estate in Sicily?
A: May–June and September–October are ideal — warm but not extreme, and the landscapes are at their most beautiful. July and August can be very hot in the interior; coastal estates like Baglio la Porta handle summer better. Most estates close for part of winter.
