Baglio la Porrta...

Baglio La Porta – a secluded paradise by Riserva dello Zingaro

On the western coast of Sicily, between Palermo and Trapani, lies one of the island’s most dramatic and breathtaking natural areas – Riserva Naturale dello Zingaro. Here, mountains and rugged hills plunge into deep blue seas, and hidden coves and tiny beaches appear like secret slices of paradise. And right here, on the edge of the reserve, you’ll find Baglio La Porta – a quiet hideaway, far from the noise of the cities.

Most of our travels in Sicily have taken us to the southern and eastern coasts. But we’ve also fallen in love with some gems on the western side – like beautiful Favignana, and now also Baglio La Porta. This is the kind of place where you can retreat from the bustle of summer and experience nature and stillness at their very best.

Peace, rhythm, and nature’s palette

Baglio La Porta is the perfect place to unwind for a few days – surrounded by majestic landscapes and with a sea view that will truly take your breath away. We loved spending lazy days by the infinity pool, perched beautifully on the cliffside – far from the crowded beaches and bustling towns that can get quite busy in peak season. Or lounging in one of the many chill-out areas scattered tastefully across the estate.

And that’s what we loved most about this place. A stunningly beautiful setting where time seems to slow down. A chance to soak in the shifting colours of nature and the wide-open views of the sea that stretch as far as the eye can see.

A historic baglio with a modern soul

Baglio La Porta – as the name suggests – is a historic baglio, a fortified farmhouse dating back to before the year 700. Today, it’s been carefully restored in a minimalist and modern style, with deep respect for the rustic beauty of its origins. It now functions as a boutique resort, best suited for adults.

The estate is also home to Jitan Restaurant, where breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served using organic, locally sourced ingredients – many of them from their own Canalotto Farm. Dining on the terrace at sunset, with the ocean just below, was an experience we won’t forget.

A perfect base – but also a destination in itself

Baglio La Porta is just a 15-minute drive from San Vito Lo Capo, where you can visit their sister hotel and rent sunbeds on the legendary white beach. But be warned – in high season, the beach can get extremely crowded. That’s why we appreciated being able to return to the calm and green embrace of Baglio La Porta afterwards.

With a car, you can also easily visit Erice, Scopello, and Trapani – and we definitely recommend renting one, as the resort is quite remote and not accessible by public transport.

Rebuilt with love

In 2022, a large fire swept through the area, damaging parts of the resort and surrounding nature. Trees and plants were lost, and parts of the buildings were destroyed. But through hard work and dedication, the property was brought back to life – and perhaps even more beautiful than before.

A final tip: If you’re planning to visit the postcard-perfect Tonnara di Scopello, be sure to book your entrance tickets in advance. We went on a whim and unfortunately were turned away – it was fully booked long before we arrived!
