Capri…

Capri – Timeless Elegance and Famous Guests

This island needs no introduction—it has been in the spotlight of the rich and famous for, well… forever. Every year, tourists from all over the world flock to this legendary destination.

Capri is a fascinating place that captivates with its dazzling beauty and inviting atmosphere. Its majestic cliffs and azure waters are simply irresistible. It’s hard not to be impressed by the luxurious yachts anchored around the island, forming a spectacular display. These yachts help maintain Capri’s reputation as a glamorous retreat for the famous—a status the island has held for decades. Since the 1950s, when icons like Marilyn Monroe visited and stayed at the Capri Palace Hotel, Capri has been a symbol of elegance and exclusivity.

The Pearl of the Gulf of Naples

Capri is located in the Gulf of Naples, just off the coast of Sorrento and near the world-famous Amalfi Coast. You can easily reach Capri from Naples by ferries that operate all year round. All ferries coming from the mainland and nearby islands arrive at Marina Grande, the island’s lively port and the natural starting point for every visitor. Read more about how to reach Capri here.

Through our many trips to Capri, we have discovered some fantastic places to stay and dine, which we are happy to share with you. Capri is divided into two municipalities – Capri and Anacapri – and each offers unique experiences. To us, they seem very different, and we highly recommend visiting both to make the most of your stay. Read more about the best restaurants and our recommended accommodations in Capri (and Anacapri) here.

Shopping and Aperitivo in Piazza Umberto I

Piazetta di Capri – the first place that greets thousands of tourists every year. Piazetta, meaning “the little square,” is called Piazza Umberto I. It is a bustling little square where cafés are nestled close together, and perhaps it is one of the most fashionable squares you can visit in Capri. If you arrive by the funicular (cable car) or taxi, you end up here. There are always plenty of people here, no matter the time of day, partly because most streets lead to or pass by this square.

Piazza Umberto I is the perfect spot to sit and watch all the people passing by—you might suddenly spot a celebrity, or simply become completely fascinated by the crowd as you soak in the atmosphere. Glenn and I often play a guessing game while sitting at one of these cafés. We try to guess which country the different people come from.

The famous long high-end shopping street, Via Camerelle, is also right next to the square. Here, designer boutiques line up like pearls on a string, complete with white, round awnings and bougainvillea growing beautifully in between. They all have enticing window displays with one goal: to lure you in. The long, narrow city streets are charming even though you might sometimes find yourself in a queue because of the crowds; and when the streets are perhaps only 2 meters wide, you can expect a bit of congestion at times.

As you stroll along these streets, you’ll often notice that shop owners are incredibly proud if a well-known celebrity has visited their store or dined at their restaurant. You’ll see photos displayed on the outside of the shop or along the brick walls, celebrating these visits—often with the celebrities themselves completely unaware of the admiration.

The beautiful Marina Piccola

Marina Piccola on Capri – “the little harbor.” Yes, it is, especially if you plan to swim at the small public beach beautifully nestled by the cliffs. You need to either come very early or late, as space is limited. But there are also beach clubs where you can rent sun loungers spread along the cliffs. These beach clubs are very popular, so it pays to book your spot early. We recommend having your accommodation book for you, so you don’t end up disappointed if there’s no space available on the day you planned to come here to sunbathe or swim.

The stroll down to Marina Piccola is fantastic. However, don’t follow the main road; you can walk along narrow pedestrian lanes and soak in the scents and colors of the many beautiful gardens along the way.

In the summer of 2023, Via Krupp reopened for transit again after being closed for many years. The road, clinging to the cliff edge from the Gardens of Augustus to Marina Piccola, offers unparalleled views and an interesting history. We have marked both hiking routes on our map here.

There are also regular buses between Capri’s center and Marina Piccola. Here are the updated timetables.

Anacapri – The Quiet and Charming Side of Capri…

The island of Capri is divided into two municipalities: Capri and Anacapri. While Anacapri often remains in the shadow of its more famous counterpart, that doesn’t last long. Once you discover this charming part of the island, it will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression.

Located on the western side of the island, Anacapri offers a much calmer atmosphere than Capri. Here, you’ll find narrow, picturesque streets, beautiful villas, and an authentic Italian charm, far from the bustling crowds of Capri town. We highly recommend exploring this side of the island.

Anacapri sits high above Capri, separated by the dramatic cliffs of Monte Solaro. There are two ways to get here: either via the winding road that clings to the mountainside or by climbing the historic Phoenician Steps—a steep but spectacular staircase with 921 smooth stone steps. We recommend taking the road for a more comfortable journey, but the Phoenician Steps are a great experience for another day—preferably in the opposite direction, from the top down.

The name Anacapri comes from Greek, where ana means “above,” reflecting its location high above Capri town. Here, life moves at a slower pace, the atmosphere is more relaxed, and you’ll get a completely different experience of the island compared to the lively harbor and center of Capri.

Take the Chairlift to Monte Solaro…

Monte Solaro towers majestically over Anacapri, offering one of the most breathtaking views on the island – with Capri at your feet and the Amalfi Coast in the distance. The chairlift ride up is an experience in itself, but not for those afraid of heights. You'll be suspended high above the winding streets and lush gardens of Anacapri, with your legs dangling freely in the air. As you ascend, you’ll enjoy a unique bird’s-eye view of the landscape – the small whitewashed houses, narrow alleyways, and vibrant gardens forming a beautiful patchwork below.

At the summit, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning panoramic view stretching across Capri, the azure Mediterranean, and the dramatic coastline of the Amalfi Coast. It’s the perfect spot to pause and take in the scenery.

For the descent, we recommend walking down along the picturesque trails that wind through the forest. This peaceful and scenic hike leads you gently back to Anacapri’s charming center. Once you're back, treat yourself to a late lunch in the lush lemon garden at La Zagara – the perfect way to end your adventure!

Sunset at Punta Carena…

If you want to experience a magical sunset, we highly recommend visiting Faro di Punta Carena, located on the southwestern tip of Anacapri. Walking from Anacapri, you’ll pass through charming narrow streets and lush gardens – a perfect late afternoon stroll. You can also take a bus or taxi. We enjoyed the walk down to the lighthouse and took the bus back to Anacapri after the sun had disappeared below the horizon.

Down by the lighthouse, you'll find the beach club Lido del Faro, a popular spot not only in the summer season. After the long walk, this is the perfect place to unwind. Sit back, order a drink, and enjoy the sunset – one of the most breathtaking on Capri.
