The East Coast

The East Coast of Sicily – Taormina, Mount Etna and Coastal Towns

The east coast of Sicily stretches from Messina in the north to Syracuse in the south and is one of the island’s most visited regions. It is known for Taormina, Mount Etna and historic coastal towns, combining dramatic landscapes, cultural landmarks and beaches, with easy access to Catania.

This area is ideal if you want to experience both sea and volcano, livelier towns and iconic viewpoints - as well as small, charming villages near Etna.

Visit Sicily in Winter and Spring

We have spent a great deal of time on the east coast – and have celebrated several Christmas seasons in Taormina. Winter and spring are in fact some of the best times to visit. There are far fewer visitors, the towns move at a different pace, and the view of snow-capped Mount Etna is truly remarkable.

The east coast may be one of the most visited parts of Sicily, but that doesn’t mean it cannot be experienced at a slower pace. Here you’ll find our guides to the towns and places we have explored in this part of eastern Sicily.

Castelmola

Historic villages

Castelmola

Castelmola is located above Taormina on the east coast of Sicily and is known for some of the island’s most spectacular viewpoints. The village features medieval ruins and sweeping panoramic views of the sea and Mount Etna.

Sicily by the sea

Taormina

Taormina lies on the east coast of Sicily and is known for its ancient Greek theatre, sweeping views of Mount Etna and its unique blend of history and seaside charm. The town is perhaps even more atmospheric during the winter months.
